Mode 4 (DC charging) is charging at a fast charging station using direct current. The battery is charged directly by the charging station, allowing for much higher charging speeds than with alternating current. To be able to charge at a fast charging station, the electric vehicle must be equipped for it.
- The charging capacity varies from 50 kW to > 175 kW
- Charging time* for 100 km ranges from 6 to 20 minutes
- Charging speed* from 300 km/h to 1,000 km/h
* with a consumption of 15 kWh/100 km and depending on the inverter in the vehicle
At a fast charging station, the charging cable is always permanently attached to the charging station. Because not all electric vehicles have the same socket for mode 4, and not all electric vehicles are equipped to charge in mode 4, many fast charging stations are equipped with three cables, each with a different EV connector:
- Chademo (Charge de Move): fast charging in mode 4
- CCS (Combined Charging System): fast charging in mode 4
- Type 2: charging in mode 3
